Collpa, a traditional farm near the city of Cajamarca

One of the prides of Cajamarca is its livestock production. It is perhaps the area of Peru where dairy resources are most used, with a varied production of cheeses that is the pride of its inhabitants. Farm La Colpa is a production unit with several attractions, mainly for children.

It is a pleasant place in the Cajamarca countryside dedicated to raising dairy cattle. The particular thing about this farm is the popular "Call of the cows", who disciplinedly go to their corresponding place for milking.

In addition to the stable, you can visit the Casa Hacienda, the artificial lagoon, the La Virgen del Carmen chapel and the viewpoint from where you can see the green and colorful mountain horizon.

A beautiful landscape of extensive green areas, where cattle are raised. It is famous for the peculiar "call of the cows" for milking.

The hacienda is located south of Cajamarca, just 9 kilometers away. There is an artificial recreational lagoon, and one of the main spectacles is that the foremen call the cows by their names and they settle into their water troughs to eat and drink.

Of course, if there is milk there are dairy products. There is a sale of cheese and white delicacy, both produced on the farm. You can also have a picnic on the shores of the lagoon, and cross the different bridges and gardens that surround it. There is also an adobe chapel and the buildings that were part of the hacienda when it was at its peak, before the government of General Velasco Alvarado, when it was incorporated into the agrarian reform process.

What to do at the La Colpa ranch?

Go to the chapel. It had the merit of having been recognized as the tallest mud building in the world. Its front measures 26 meters high.

Admire the giant cacti. Many people are amazed to see the extraordinary cacti, more than three meters high, even in bloom.

Explore the buildings. The mansion and administration areas can be visited and are examples of the architecture of the large haciendas that have existed in Peru since colonial times.

Witness the spectacle of the cows that respond to the name. The foremen mention each of the names, and the cows enter each of their stables, either to feed or to be milked.

Buy crafts. There are cheeses, implements, leather goods and a white delicacy that is considered among the best of those produced in Cajamarca.

Walk around the lagoon. It is an artificial water reservoir, inhabited by ducks and swans. Several bridges cross it and it is a nice place to have a picnic or take photographs.

How to get to the La Colpa farm?

By public transport. The units that reach the La Colpa ranch are those on Route 16. They leave from their diagonal whereabouts to the Musical Oval on Route 3N and Atahualpa Avenue. From there they charge two soles to the entrance of the hacienda, which is considered a tourist attraction in the area. There are units even until 8 pm, the time when the last tour ends.

In a private car. From the Musical Oval, you must take route 3N, and drive for about 8 kilometers to the entrance of the hacienda. You have to take the exit towards the town of Jesús, and turn at the arch that says La Colpa. This structure is the original one that has been maintained since the founding of the hacienda.

On private tour. Cajamarca tourism companies offer the tour to the La Colpa hacienda for a price that ranges between 35 and 50 soles. They comply with round-trip transportation and the entry ticket to the dairy production unit. The entire tour usually takes about four hours.

Recommendations

  • Wear a light coat. Even more so if you choose the afternoon shift to visit the hacienda, in the evening hours the temperature usually drops.
  • Be attentive to the children. There are some restricted areas so it is worth being careful where you go.
  • Buy cheese or delicacy. Local workers work on this farm, so buying one of their products helps their economy.
