The Huayna Picchu mountain (also called Wayna Picchu) is the mountain that appears in the background, in the classic postcards of the lost city of Machu Picchu. Huayna Picchu tickets 2024

What is Huayna Picchu?

Also known as Waynapicchu, it is the mountain that guards the Inca Citadel in the northern part of the enclosure. It is located 2,720 meters above sea level (m.s.n.m.), almost 300 meters above the Inca site. More than 600 years ago, on the edges of the mountain, the Incas built stone paths. In addition, they built a cave called the Temple of the Moon, a place of worship at the top of the Wonder of the World.

Climbing to the top of this summit is not easy. Roads are steep on the edge of heart-stopping cliffs and, above all, tickets are hard to come by. Today, ascending the roads of the Huayna Picchu mountain is considered one of the most incredible short walks in the world. This is due to the adventure of crossing the narrow roads next to amazing ravines and surrounded by abundant flora and fauna. Also for the splendid landscape that can only be glimpsed from the top. For many travelers, Machu Picchu would not be the same without the visit to Waynapicchu. The only way to experience this adventure is by booking the Circuit 4 Huayna Picchu ticket in time.

What to see or do in the Huayna Picchu mountain?

  • The Waynapicchu is the mountain that gives shape to the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. Its name means ‘young mountain’, unlike Machu Picchu mountain, known as ‘the old mountain’.
  • To climb to the top you will have to cross dizzying paths and steep stone steps. It is estimated that it is traveled approximately 2 kilometers. The most difficult section is known as the ‘Huayna Picchu death stairs’ as they are located on the edge of several meter high cliffs.
  • From the top of Huayna Picchu you can see incredible landscapes like nowhere else in Machu Picchu.
  • The walk to the top of Waynapicchu is recognized as one of the most amazing short walks in the world.

Possible impediments to access to the Huayna Picchu Mountain

It should be known that the ascent from the town of Aguas Calientes to the citadel of Machu Picchu takes approximately 25 minutes by bus or 2 hours walking. Once located in here, you must begin the ascent to the Huayna Picchu mountain and this can only be done on foot, so a good physical condition is required. It should also be taken into account that access for children under 12 is prohibited, due to the steepness of the ascent and the dangerous cliffs of more than 400 meters that are always present throughout the ascent. In many sections the traveler must use his hands to be able to hold on safely, as a fall or slip would lead to a fatal fall towards the immense rocks that are part of the Urubamba River, located down the hill.

It is not highly recommended to do this hike if you have an extreme fear or panic of heights.

Huayna Picchu: What should I not do?

Don't book your ticket on short notice

Only 400 people can enter Huayna Picchu daily. This causes that few are lucky who manage to ascend the Waynapicchu paths. That is why the main mistake of someone who wants to know this incredible place is not to book their ticket in advance. It is advisable to do it 3 months in advance. However, in high season (from April to October) it is advisable to do it up to 6 months before.

Do not be late at the entrance door

Circuit 4 Huayna Picchu tickets grant access to Huayna Picchu and also include entry to Circuit 4 (the lower part) of the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu. Group 1 enters between 7 a.m., and visitors can stay for an additional 2 hours in the Wonder of the World. Group 2 enters at 8 a.m., and you are allowed an extra 2 hours to explore Circuit 4. Arriving late may prevent you from having enough time to experience all the attractions of this remarkable site.

Do not climb Huayna Picchu if you suffer from vertigo

Only people over 12 years old can climb Huayna Picchu. However, it is not advisable to climb the steep paths of the Waynapicchu if you suffer from vertigo. The chasms that surround the narrow stairs of this place are a scene of terror for visitors who suffer from fear of heights.

Don't underestimate the mountain

If you are not afraid of heights, do not trust either. Even the most experienced mountain climber knows that all mountains must be respected, no matter how safe they may seem. Huayna Picchu has very safe trails if you follow the signposted path. However, it is not advisable to underestimate the roads. In the rainy season (from October to April), these get wet so you must walk carefully. During the tour, there is a place called "the stairs of death". But the name does not mean that there have been accidents. No one has died on that journey.

Do not trespass the lanyards

The paths that climb the Huayna Picchu mountain are separated from the abysses by security cords. In addition, all the trails are very well marked. If you walk their paths, it is necessary not to cross the security divisions or to look for a path on your own.

Don't forget the camera

The top of Huayna Picchu is located at 2720 meters above sea level. This height is almost 300 meters above the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu. That is why the view from the highest point is fascinating. The best photos of the Wonder of the World can be obtained from the highest point.

Don't forget to visit the Temple of the Moon

The Temple of the Moon is a natural construction made of stone inside a cave whose purpose is not defined by archaeologists. This temple can only be reached by climbing the steep paths of the Huayna Picchu mountain. It is reached through a narrow path.

Do not violate the rules

Huayna Picchu receives 200 people per shift, so there are rules to follow in order to guarantee the safety of all visitors.

  • You will not be able to carry backpacks weighing more than 5 kilos.
  • You may not carry walking sticks.
  • You cannot smoke.
  • You may not throw food waste into the premises.
  • Do not disturb the flora and fauna of the place.
  • Do not disturb the order or tranquility of other visitors.

If you have booked Circuit 4 Huayna Picchu tickets, you should plan and organize your time accordingly.

How to organize the trip to stay the night before in Aguas Calientes?

Aguas Calientes is the town located at the foot of Machu Picchu. If you decide to stay in the town at the base of the mountain where Machu Picchu is situated to avoid any delays, it's a great idea—especially if you have booked the Circuit 4 Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket for groups 1 or 2. This allows you to enter the Inca city of Machu Picchu very early and access Huayna Picchu from 7 a.m.

For those planning to enter Huayna Picchu in group 3, we recommend entering the Machu Picchu circuit from 9 a.m. This way, you can make the most of your time in Machu Picchu. Remember that the Circuit 4 Machu Picchu - Huayna Picchu ticket allows approximately 4 hours to explore both Machu Picchu and the Huayna Picchu mountain. Take your time, and exercise caution, especially when traversing the dizzying trails of 'Huayna.'

Machu Picchu Circuit 4 - Huayna Picchu ticket hours

  • Schedule 1: Huayna Picchu (Entrance to 07:00 am Machu Picchu (Starting at 09:00 am)
  • Schedule 2: Huayna Picchu (Entrance to 08:00 am) Machu Picchu (Starting at 10:00 am)

  • Schedule 4: Huayna Picchu (Entrance 10:00 am) Machu Picchu (Starting at 12:00 am)

How to organize the trip to stay the night before in Cusco?

If you stay in Cusco, we recommend you avoid the first groups, to any of the mountains of Machu Picchu. It is very difficult to arrive in time to enter these groups. And if you are thinking of staying in Cusco before the day of your visit to Machu Picchu, it may be best to avoid the tickets that include the mountains of Machu Picchu. Well, unless you book the first train schedule to Machu Picchu, you will not be able to arrive to enter even in the third groups.

How to Organize the Trip Once in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu

If You Will Enter Huayna Picchu in Group 1:

We recommend entering Machu Picchu from 7 a.m. and being among the first to ascend Huayna Picchu. While Machu Picchu may be covered in morning fog, depending on the time of your visit and a bit of luck, you might witness the fog dissipate over the Inca city from the top of Huayna—a bit like an artist revealing a masterpiece.

If You Will Enter Huayna Picchu in Group 2:

For this group, it's essential to enter Machu Picchu promptly at 8 a.m. Proceed directly to the entrance gate of the mountain to avoid being late and missing the chance to enter. The experience in this group is similar to the first schedule, often with morning fogs. At the top, you might encounter some tourists who entered in the first group.

If You Will Enter Huayna Picchu in Group 3 and 4:

Many people opt for Group 3 to avoid the morning fog that typically covers Machu Picchu. However, keep in mind that you'll be ascending while those from Groups 1 and 2 are descending. If you've chosen this group, we recommend entering Machu Picchu at 9 a.m., accessing the Huayna Picchu trails in Groups 3 and 4 between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and then exploring the ancient Inca city.

Huayna Picchu is closed in 2024?

On October 7, 2021, Huayna Picchu was temporarily closed due to the pandemic. However, for this year, both Waynapicchu and Huchuypicchu will be open throughout the year.

During the pandemic, the Ministry of Culture closed Machu Picchu and its surrounding mountains. In 2024, both Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu have been reopened. We strongly recommend booking in advance, as there is significant interest from travelers to visit these iconic mountains.
