The majestic Tambopata Lake Sandoval certainly boasts its reputation. Despite being close to Puerto Maldonado, it is within the Tambopata National Reserve and adjacent to the Bahuaja Sonene Park. It offers an excellent experience of the Amazon and wildlife. If you travel to Puerto Maldonado you must visit it since the Lake is one of the main tourist attractions. 

It has registered more than a thousand species of birds, in addition to the giant otter, the black caiman, the river wolf, macaws, turtles and cranes, many of them in danger of extinction. It is a kind of ecological pantry of Peru, where the nocturnal sounds of the jungle reign in their most natural state.  

The variety of marine fauna is another characteristic of the place with 6,500 species of fish, among them the famous paiche, select ingredient of the highest regional cuisine due to its delicate and tender meat.

It is accessed by a 3.5 km trail; that crosses forests, the magic begins from the route of the path where you will notice the variety of flora and fauna you have, where you can see many birds, monkeys, rodents, reptiles and many varieties of butterflies and insects. As for the flora, we will be surprised by the immense trees that are thousands of years old, such as lupuna, which is characterized by its enormous fins, chestnut, cedars and many forest species, which provide refuge for many species of animals, forming a balance between the most impressive flora and fauna of the Peruvian Amazon. Lake Sandoval Tambopata is a pristine horseshoe lake inhabited by various species of animals; giant otters, alligators, turtles, impressive fish such as paiche, and much more. It is located just 20 minutes from Puerto Maldonado within the Tambopata National Reserve. Cleaning is expected in each Lake Sandoval Lodge, full of all kinds of "fauna"; the rooms, restaurant, lobby, bar, and hammock bungalow are completely protected by screens, which prevent the entry of mosquitoes.  

Their individual rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The simple, double, matrimonial and family rooms are shaped like cabins, have a view of the forest or gardens and have terraces, where hammocks are located. All rooms have private bathrooms with hot showers. 

Among its strong points is the food, a delight according to travelers, with all the base ingredients of the place, the bar and comfortable hammocks, which give rise to an excellent nap among the cry of birds and animals of the place.

From Puerto Maldonado take a Lake Sandoval tour. one of the most beautiful in the Peruvian Amazon. Lake Sandoval tour full day: 

Reception at the hostel or land terminal transfer to the office for the corresponding records. then we will go to Puerto Capitanía where we will embark on a motor boat to navigate the Madre de Dios River. 

During the Lake Sandoval tour we will observe some species such as turtles, alligators, lizards and others around its shores approximately 50 minutes, we will arrive at the post control of the Sandoval lake reserve. where we will register to enter the Sandoval lake reserve, from there we will start a 3 km hike until we reach the Lake Sandoval, taking a canoe to reach our hostel that is located inside the Sandoval lake reserve and then we will begin to explore the flora and fauna as its typical inhabitants - giant otters or river wolf, black caiman, prehistoric birds called the Shansho, herons, cormorants, kingfishers, etc. then we will return to our hostel.

For lunch after lunch we will walk through our trails with our professional naturalist guide. He explains us about these animals that live in the Amazon jungle, such as monkeys, birds, insects, giant trees, chestnut and plants. In the afternoon we will take the road back to the city of Puerto Maldonado.

 

Sandoval Lake 2 days tour:

1st Day 

Reception at the ground terminal or airport transfer to the office for the corresponding records. Then we go to the Madre Dios river pier where we will board a motorized canoe, we will sail down the river only 40 minutes, to a port. Then we start a 3 km (2 miles) walk towards the Sandoval Lake Reserve; stopping to see ancient trees that are hundreds of years old, medicinal plants, exotic insects, butterflies, multicolored birds, monkeys, and with some luck one or more mammals up to a narrow channel from there, we will sail in a rowing boat the middle of a forest flooded with palm trees that leads to Sandoval Lake, our hostel that is located within the Sandoval Lake Reserve. 

After lunch we will begin to explore the Sandoval lake reserve in our rowing canoe as well as its typical inhabitants - giant river otters, black caimans, a prehistoric bird shansho, herons, cormorants, kingfisher .etc. 

Night activity in a canoe rowing in the reserve of Lake Sandoval, this time to carry out an observation of alligators at night, birds, turtles that are nocturnal animals. Our professional naturalist guide will show us and explain us about these animals. 

We will spend the night in our hostel private room with bathrooms and showers. 

 

2nd Day

Today we will get up at 5:00 in the morning to head to the palm-tree collpa we will walk accompanied by a beautiful sunrise for 40 minutes; where we will observe hundreds of macaws and parrots feeding on the (aguaje); this fruit contains 21 to 38 times more Pro Vitamin: mineral salts, sodium, fat etc, Mauritia flexuosa is a kind of palm tree or (moriche). It has a bunch with more than thousand fruits, you will have the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience observing the macaws of different multicolored species, return to the cabin.  

After breakfast, return towards Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the terminal or the Airport.

Sandoval Lake 3 days tour:

1st Day

After lunch you will have a walk along our trails with our Naturalist guide observing the diversities of our amazonia such as, giant trees, native plants, medicinal plants and the famous ayahuasca plant and knowing more species such as toads, insects, spiders, birds and some mammals of the area, monkeys, tapir, etc; after this activity we will return to our lodge and dinner. 

After dinner we will do the night walk with our naturalist guide where we will have the opportunity to meet other nocturnal species that only tend at night in search of their food as Tarantulas and the possibility of seeing the monkey Musmuqui or monkey owl (Aotus nancymae); they feed of fruits, nectar, leaves, insects, lizards, birds and small mammals. Return to the lodge Overnight and dinner. The sounds of the jungle will accompany our stay in the Amazon. 

 

3rd Day 

We will get up at 5:00 in the morning to go to the palm tree clay, we will walk accompanied by a beautiful sunrise during 40 minutes; where we will observe hundreds of macaws and parrots feeding on the (aguaje). After lunch we will start exploring the Sandoval lake reserve in our paddle canoe where we will observe its typical inhabitants in their natural habitat as: giant otters or (river wolf) ) black alligators, shansho prehistoric bird herons, cormorants, kingfishers etc; and you will live a beautiful experience enjoying the sunset, return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious dinner. Night activity on board in a canoe to rowing we will go in search of alligators in their natural habitat, Birds, Turtles that are nocturnal animals. After dinner we will perform the nocturnal walk with our naturalist guide where we will have the opportunity to meet other nocturnal species that only go out at night looking for their food like. Toad tarantulas and the possibility of seeing the monkey Musmuqui or monkey owl (Aotus nancymae), insects, lizards, birds and small mammals. Return to our lodge. 

 

3rd Day

4th Day

After breakfast we will return by the same road that we will enter the Sandoval Lake Reserve with direction to the City of Puerto Maldonado then transfer to the terminal or airport.
