Tourism in Mollendo

The beautiful city of Mollendo is part of the province of Islay, which is located in the Arequipa region. Mollendo is famous for being a spa city where one of the main ports in Peru is located. Mollendo is, currently, considered one of the most important cities in southern Peru.

Tourist attractions

The main attraction of the city, as this is a spa city, are its beaches, among which are: Arantas, a quiet spa where it is possible to swim, in addition to hiking through the mountain formations that surround it; La Huata beach, which is surrounded by rock formations that can be climbed by the most daring visitors; Punta Hornillos, at kilometer 844 of the Panamericana Sur; among others that are mostly characterized by presenting basic services, as well as large recreation areas.

Another must-visit attraction when you go to Mollendo, and explore the beaches, is the Malecón Ratti, which is characterized by being a large terrace that is built on a cliff and from which it is possible to have a wonderful view of the sunsets on the beaches of Mollendo.

Also, another place from which to contemplate beautiful views is the Mollendo Tourist Pier, which has rest areas for passersby, and invites, due to the effect of its view and its night lighting, to take romantic walks in its vicinity.

The Playa Uno Tourist Complex is also located in Mollendo, quite close to the city. This leisure site has areas such as a swimming pool circuit, sports fields, as well as restaurants and nightclubs quite close to the Mollendo sea. Another similar site is the Aquatic Park, where there are different pools, as well as 15 types of slides designed to entertain visitors.

In Mollendo it is also possible to recognize interesting tourist sites at an architectural level, as is the case of the famous Forga Castle that was ordered to be built during the first decade of the 20th century on a rock at the intersection between beaches 2 and 3 of Mollendo.

Festivities

Whoever wants to get to know Mollendo during its festivities can visit the city, especially during key dates such as January 6, the day on which the founding of the City of Mollendo is celebrated, which, according to records, would have taken place in the year 1871, although it is known that it existed from earlier times. For this celebration, the spa dresses up and receives the date with a spectacular serenade to the city, after which it continues with different cultural, sporting and recreational events whose goal, in addition to honoring such an important day, is to unite to the population and share the jubilant spirit of the citizens with all visitors.

How to get?

Getting to the city of Mollendo is quite simple. If the visitor is already in Arequipa, just take a bus that leaves from the same city and takes two and a half hours, on average, to reach Mollendo. It is recommended to visit Mollendo especially during the summer, when it is possible to make the most of its beautiful beaches, and when also, due to the same increase in tourism, it is possible to attend different musical events that the authorities and individuals organize in the spas.
