Geological Formations of Torre Torre

Home / Travel Blog / Geological Formations of Torre Torre
Geological Formations of Torre Torre

Its name is due to the geological formations that look like tall stone towers between 10 and 30 meters. high, formed by the erosive action of rain and wind. It is recommended to visit them during the dry season in the region (April to November). Located 2.3 km from Plaza Constitución in Huancayo (10 minutes by private car).

The Torre Torre Quaternary deposits located at the foot of the mountain flank east of the city of Huancayo in the central Peruvian highlands are more than 200m thick. They are made up of silt, clay and gravel shaped by a topography of gentle to steep slopes, affected by the erosion of gullies and the canyoning of streams from 3300 meters above sea level. Such unconsolidated deposits of late Pliocene-early Pleistocene age and of glacial-fluvial origin (Wise and Noble., 2008) rest regionally on the inter-Andean Mantaro depression. Based on the morphology and excellent exposure of the observation area, it is possible to appreciate its sedimentary nature in detail. Whose set of lithofacies and evolution are explained below for 45m of raised stratigraphic column.

Stratigraphically, they are found unconformably on the metamorphic basement of phyllites, quartzites and slates of the Excelsior Group of pre-Cambrian-Devonian age (Megard et al., 1968). For the description of lithofacies, the use of the Miall (1978) code is appropriate, which systematically groups ground observations, especially those concerning lithology and sedimentary structures.

It should be noted that the composition of most of the clasts included in the described sequences correspond to detritus from the Excelsior Group. While the paleocurrents of the channeled and imbricated facies suggest westward transport.

So, it is possible to suggest that:

The predominance of Gmg facies indicates sedimentation by debris flows (huaycos) or debris flow through the emplacement of an alluvial fan. While Gt and Gh are typical of river transport. However, many of the facies that show good stratification (Gh) are also interpreted as sheet-flood deposits based on the fact that they lie intercalated in accordance with the Gmg facies. Although the outcrops in the town of Torre Torre can be roughly classified as mud flows and colluvial deposits. From the sedimentological point of view, they are interpreted as stream channels that ran in the distal part of a prograding alluvial fan (towards the west) during the Pleistocene erosion of the Paleozoic basement of the Eastern Cordillera of central Peru.

Tourism in Torre Torre Huancayo

A few kilometers from the Plaza Constitución in Huancayo, nature has given capricious shapes to an area of ??clay land known as Torre Torre. This area is located in the upper part of the “La Libertad” hill, going there is not difficult. In a few minutes the visitor can be admiring these beauties of nature. The profiles he finds resemble the columns of the Roman Colosseum, which still resist the action of time.

This place known as Torre Torre is even little known by the Huancaínos themselves. Little has been written about this curious natural formation and the only literary reference made to it is hidden in a romantic novel authored by a man from Trujillo.

Natural erosion has been the fantastic executor of this work. The torrential rains, which for many years have fallen on the region, have carved out for posterity these monuments that unfortunately very few admire.

The local people fear these profiles, which are similar to those that nature has also formed in Huayllay (Cerro de Pasco) and which is known as “forest of stones.” When the sun goes down the shadows draw silhouettes that resemble animals or people.

In the lower part of “Torre-Torre” there are narrow paths with silver trickles of seepage water that flow slowly and give a romantic atmosphere. This is what the lovers who have chosen the sector as the ideal place to tell each other their feelings have understood. Others have Torre Torre as their source of consultation. They tell the “towers” ??their problems loudly and believe they get an answer from the echo. What's more, they imagine that the area is inhabited by deities.

Getting to know Torre Torre is easy, the distance can be covered on foot and without any difficulty. It is exciting to visit. The panorama gives the sensation of being in an extraordinary place in which man has not intervened, except to observe and admire the mysteries of nature and the goodness of God.
