Transformers in Machu Picchu

"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" is one of the most anticipated releases of 2023. Unlike other installments, the seventh film in the saga is not directed by Michael Bay but by Steven Caple Jr. In addition, "Transformers 7" will feature a cast of new stars such as Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Domenic di Rosa and Lauren Vélez and will show the beauty of Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel.

The most exciting thing for his Peruvian followers is that the production recorded in locations such as Cusco, Lambayeque, San Martín and Tarapoto. In this sense, the actors and the director shared their experience behind the scenes.

What is "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" about?

“Transformers": Rise of the Beasts" will take audiences on an adventure through the 1990s and introduce the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons to the ongoing battle between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth.

“The Predacons in this movie are more reptilian in nature. We have seen them in other films in the Transformers saga, but here we will present a renewed side for the viewer, ”director Steven Caple Jr. detailed, previously.

"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts": cast

  • Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime
  • Liza Koshy as Arcee
  • Pete Davidson as Mirage
  • Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal
  • Tobe Nwigwe as Reek
  • Michelle Yeoh as Airazor.

The seventh "Transformers" film is scheduled to premiere on June 8, 2023. An unmissable date for fans of the film franchise and the animated series from the 80s.

What did the director of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" say about Peru?

"We filmed on top of Machu Picchu, where it had never been filmed before. How did they do this? It's crazy," said the film's director. "It was magical," he emphasized of the experience of shooting in the Inca citadel, as well as all the challenges of the environment.

"We had a shaman blessing the film and honoring the Peruvian people. It is a gift and we do not take it lightly," highlighted the actors of "Transformers: rise of the beasts" who will fight side by side with the Autobots.

Facts about Transformers in Machu Picchu

  • The Avant Premiere of the movie Transformers: The Awakening of the Beasts in the city of Cusco was almost a ceremony, as a parade of cars was organized through the Plaza de Armas and they received the greeting of the Inca at the doors of the Cusco Cathedral. There were also fireworks, Autobots cosplay and the day closed with an outdoor concert.
  • The film was dubbed into Quechua in its entirety by the fans. With this gesture of inclusion, the film was able to reach thousands of Quechua-speakers in the region. It should be noted that only the scene of the conversation between Amaru and Optimus Primal mentioned above was respected in Quechua in all existing official dubbings.
  • Although the film is set in 1994, the inclusion of a song featured in the second trailer, DMX's Ruff Ryders' Anthem, was criticized as it was released on the market at a later date: in 1998.
  • The scene of the pursuit of the Autobots and the Predacons within the city of Cusco was filmed on the road that leads from the city of Cusco to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
  • The film was released days before the ancestral celebration of Inti Raymi. As we have already mentioned, this film refers to this festivity, but what the producers did not know is that this festival consists of three stages: El Qoricancha, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuaman. The feature film shows the ceremony as exclusive to the Plaza de Armas, leaving aside the other two locations.
  • The scenes of the lush jungle where the Autobots meet the rest of the Maximals side were filmed in Tarapoto, belonging to the department of San Martín, located in eastern Peru. It makes sense that a forest with these characteristics serves as a home for the animals that the Maximals represent, but in real life there is no such place within the department of Cusco.
  • Finally, it is not the first time that Machu Picchu appears in the Transformers universe. In episode 9 of its first animated series, the Autobots and Decepticons travel to Peru in search of the Crystal of Power, but the temple where this treasure rests turns out to be a Mayan pyramid, something totally inaccurate to what we will find in the Inca Culture.
  • Take advantage while the movie is on the billboard to enjoy a movie full of action, adventure and plenty of culture. Never before have Cusco, Machu Picchu or the Inca Culture been so exposed to the world as they are now thanks to the seventh art.

Transformers in Machu Picchu and Cusco

Let's see in detail the Cusco locations that were captured on the big screen in this feature film full of action, adventure and the endearing Autobots and now the Maximals. We warn you in advance: Spoiler Alert!

Qoricancha

When practitioner Elena Wallace investigates the strange markings on the eagle figurine, she realizes how related they are to some found at the Temple of the Sun in Cusco, Peru. Although her real name is not mentioned in Quechua, she refers to the Qoricancha.

As we well know, this place of worship is famous for denoting the clear clash between two cultures: the Spanish and the Inca since, after the Spanish conquest, the Convent of Santo Domingo was built on top of the remains of the temple.

Sacsayhuaman

When they arrive in Cusco, our beloved autobots land in the remains of the ceremonial center of Sacsayhuaman. From here, they have an excellent view of the city from where they will plan the next steps to find the missing part of the key that will allow them to return to their world. They focus specifically on the Qoricancha and the Plaza de Armas.

The Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Center, considered the icon of Inca architecture in the Imperial City of Cusco, was built with the help of more than 20,000 men and its construction took about 50 years.

Main Square

Our protagonists seek to reach the Qoricancha temple passing through the crowd gathered in the Plaza de Armas, where the Inti Raymi is taking place. Here we can see different floats, folkloric dances of the region, live music and many colors in general. The protagonists, Elena Wallace and Noah Diaz, used typical costumes from the region to camouflage themselves and go unnoticed by the Predacons.

Inti Raymi

The thousand-year-old Festival of the Sun, whose name in Quechua is Inti Raymi, turns out to be the most striking scene in the entire Transformers: Rise of the Beasts movie. Among the dances that can be distinguished are that of the mischievous Saqras, the Wallatas, the Caporales and the Huaylarsh.

This ancient ceremony, where the sun god or Inti is worshiped every June 24, has become one of the most popular celebrations in Peru and year after year attracts numerous visitors, both local and foreign.

Macchu Picchu

One of the best action scenes is lived in the facilities of our Modern Wonder: Machu Picchu. The clash between the side of the Autobots and Maximals, and the side of the Predacons, led by Scourge, takes place in the main square of the citadel, as well as on the famous side platforms and ends with a shot where you can see the Pisonay . This "solitary tree" was cultivated more than 200 years ago and was considered sacred by the Incas.

Talking about the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is talking not only about how advanced the Inca civilization was in terms of architecture, but also about an entire millenary culture. Such was the complexity of its construction that the exact purpose of this citadel located at 2,430 meters above sea level is still not known with certainty. We share what is already known and historically recorded in our Machu Picchu timeline.

Bonus: Quechua language

In a conversation between Optimus Primal and Optimus Prime, the gorilla mentions to the trailer that they have adapted to their environment rather than hide. Proof of this is the close relationship that the Maximals have with human beings. Specifically with the last family descended from the Andean tribe that dedicated itself to taking care of them when they arrived on our planet hundreds of years ago.

In this scene you can hear a brief exchange of words in Quechua between the leader of the maximals and the curaca Amaru. What were they saying? This is the translation:

  • Amaru: Qusikuni jamuskayquimanta machukausaq masillay. (I'm glad you came to our town, old fellow.)
  • Optimus Primal: Allillanchu wayqey (How are you brother?)

This indigenous language belongs to the region of Cusco and the Andes in South America. Quechua has a long history and was the main language of the Inca Empire.

Machu Picchu shines in New York's Times Square after the premiere of Transformers

This time, Machu Picchu, one of the locations where this tape was recorded, appeared in Times Square in New York, in the United States.

After its premiere on June 9, the omnipotent Machu Picchu appeared on the corner of Times Square in New York, in the United States.

In a promotional video of almost 15 seconds, it was possible to appreciate the Peruvian landscapes that were the scenes of "Transformers: The awakening of the beasts". The tape in particular has scenes that were filmed in the regions of Cusco and San Martín.

Our wonder of the world appears during one of the scenes from the movie "Transformers" and the advertisement culminates with the PromPerú logo.
